Five places to visit on the East Coast of Tasmania

As summer approaches, it's time to plan that perfect getaway, embracing those long Tassie days and mild, lingering evenings.

Tasmania, with its incredible cultural richness, pristine landscapes, delectable food, and remote charm, was recently named one of Lonely Planet's Top 10 Regions in the World to visit. And the best part? All these fantastic experiences can be found right here on Tasmania's enchanting east coast. And with our BIG4 Tassie Getaway Parks St Helens situated right in the midst of it all, we know this area like the back of our hands… So, here's our curated list of must-visit places on Tasmania’s East Coast, for your summer adventure.

1. The Bay of Fires

This coastal gem stretches along 50 kilometres of the east coast, from Binalong Bay, just up the road from St Helens, to Eddystone Point, further north. It's a remote and breathtaking landscape of pristine beaches, coastal vegetation, and woodlands. What makes it truly exceptional is the untouched beauty that you won't often find in other well-known destinations – even in Tasmania. And while it’s relatively untouched, it’s still only a 30 minute drive away from your base at Tassie Getaway Parks - BIG4 St Helens!

2. Freycinet

The rugged Freycinet Peninsula is the embodiment of east coast beauty. It's home to renowned beaches like Wineglass Bay, hailed by Outside magazine as one of the world's top ten beaches. This national park offers everything from short walks to multi-day bushwalks, with stunning mountain, beach, and forest landscapes. Being only an hour’s drive away from St Helens, why not spend the day exploring this beautiful landscape, before heading back to your campsite to share tales of your adventures around the campfire.

3. Maria Island

Maria Island, to the south of St Helens, is a national park that protects a unique blend of natural, geological, and historical wonders. A ferry from Triabunna takes you to this World Heritage-listed site, where you can explore colonial ruins, the incredible Painted Cliffs, and the fascinating Fossil Cliffs. With no cars on the island, you can discover its treasures on foot or by bicycle. Maria also boasts remarkable wildlife, including Tasmanian devils and diverse birdlife.

4. Bicheno

For a classic Tassie summer holiday, Bicheno is another idyllic east coast destination. Its mild climate, stunning beaches, and clear seas, make for an ideal summer day at the beach. You can explore Douglas Apsley National Park (including some great waterholes that are perfect for swimming!), go fishing or snorkelling, or simply relax on the warm beaches. Being just an hour’s drive from St Helens, it is the perfect distance to make a day of it, from your base at BIG4 St Helens. If the beach (or the weather) isn’t happening, family activities are plentiful, from penguin watching tours to wildlife parks.

5. The Great Eastern Drive

Technically, it's more than one place, but this coastal road trip along Tasmania's east coast is a holiday in itself. Whether you head to the East Coast from Launceston, or come from Hobart, in Tasmania’s south, the 220 kilometres of seaside towns, beautiful beaches, national parks, and lush valleys will impress at every turn. Meander, take your time, stop when you please, and let the East Coast's story unfold before you. And the best part (as far as we’re concerned!)? Whether you’re coming from the north or the south, St Helens is the perfect place to stop for a night or two!

So, there you have it – a collection of perfect, unmissable summer holiday experiences on Tasmania's east coast, all a stone’s throw from BIG4 Tassie Getaway Parks St Helens. The only challenge you'll face is deciding which of our fantastic range of accommodation you should book!
