Little Penguins at Lillico Beach
One of Tasmania’s most delightful wildlife experiences is waiting just a short drive from Ulverstone. At Lillico Beach, you can watch Little Penguins return from the ocean to their burrows each evening.
Also known as Fairy Penguins, Little Penguins are the world’s smallest penguin, standing at around 30 centimetres tall and weighing about one kilogram. After a day fishing in the open ocean, they gather offshore before making their way ashore under the cover of darkness.
From the Lillico Beach viewing platform, you can watch this nightly ritual while keeping a respectful distance and allowing the penguins to go about their business.
When to visit
Penguin viewing is generally best during the breeding season from September to May, with local volunteers and Parks and Wildlife rangers on-site at various times to help visitors enjoy the experience responsibly. The summer months, from mid-December to mid-February, are also a popular time to visit.

Little Penguins are wild animals, so please help protect this special colony by following a few simple rules:
- Don't use any torches or lights (down lights are on the platform).
- Stay calm and quiet while watching the penguins.
- Never catch, touch, chase or harass the penguins.
- Keep a respectful distance and allow them to move freely.
- Remember that this is their home, so leave the area quietly after viewing.
