Tassie Tips: Guide to Traveling on the Spirit of Tasmania

25th September 2024

Thinking of visiting Tasmania? One of the most scenic and convenient ways to start your adventure is by taking the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong in Victoria to Devonport. Whether you're bringing your car, campervan, or just yourself, traveling across the Bass Strait by sea offers a unique and exciting experience. Here are some practical tips to help make your journey smooth and enjoyable.

1. Book Early and Choose the Right Sailing

The Spirit of Tasmania operates both day and night sailings in peak periods, and just once per day over the winter period. This gives you flexibility when planning your trip. Day sailings allow you to enjoy the stunning views of the Bass Strait, while night sailings give you the option to sleep and wake up in Tasmania, ready for adventure. Pro Tip: Book early during peak times like summer holidays and school breaks, as the ferry fills up fast! If you're travelling with a camper or caravan, book extra early because space for high vehicles is limited.

2. Sailing Times

Day sailings: Available only during summer and peak holiday periods, these sailings depart at 9/9:30 am and arrive around 6:30/7 pm the same day. While it takes up most of the day, you'll enjoy more food options, activities, and beautiful ocean views.
Night sailings: Running throughout the year, these sailings depart at 9/9:30 pm and arrive by 6:30/7 am the following morning. This is a great option to make the most of your holiday time! If you book an overnight cabin, you'll arrive in Tassie well rested and ready to start your adventure.

3. Arrive nice and early

Check-in opens between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours prior to your scheduled departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. If you arrive after check-in has closed, you will not be permitted to board the vessel.

4. Pack for Comfort

If you're taking a night sailing, it's worth booking a private cabin for a good night’s sleep. For day sailings, consider upgrading to a recliner for added comfort. It can get chilly on deck, so be sure to pack a jacket or sweater, even in warmer months. Also, remember to pack essentials like a small bag with any medications, phone chargers, and entertainment for the trip.

5. Bring Your Own Vehicle

One of the best perks of traveling on the Spirit of Tasmania is the ability to bring your car, campervan, or caravan, which makes exploring Tassie’s beautiful landscapes a breeze. Travel straight from home to the terminal and drive on board, no need for public transport and airport luggage restrictions. Bring as much luggage as you can fit in, your mountain bike, your surf board, or your skis!

Driving off the ferry means you’re free to explore places like St Helens, Ulverstone, and Stanley at your own pace. Make sure your vehicle is clean, and all gas bottles are securely stored and turned off to comply with boarding regulations.

6. Travelling with Pets

The other great thing about traveling on the Spirit of Tasmania is that you can bring your pet! It is easy and convenient, but there are a few important things to keep in mind. Pets are not allowed in passenger areas, but the ferry provides safe, comfortable kennels onboard. It’s recommended to book a kennel in advance, as space is limited. You can't visit your pet during the journey. Be sure to pack everything your dog will need, like bedding, food, and water bowls. Always check the latest guidelines on traveling with pets to ensure a smooth journey for you and your furry friend!

7. Fuel Up Before Departure

The Spirit of Tasmania departs from Geelong, and while there's plenty of parking and convenience nearby, it's always a good idea to fuel up your vehicle before you board. That way, you'll be ready to hit the road when you arrive in Tasmania without worrying about finding a petrol station right away.

8. Explore the Onboard Facilities

The ferry has a range of amenities to keep you entertained during the journey. There are cinemas, a gaming lounge, and a kid’s play area to keep everyone entertained. Enjoy a meal at the Tasmanian Market Kitchen, where you can sample fresh Tasmanian produce and local wines. Tip: If you're a wine enthusiast, take a bottle or two of Tasmanian wine to enjoy at your destination!

9. Prepare for Seasickness

The crossing of the Bass Strait can be rough at times, especially during the cooler months. If you're prone to seasickness, consider taking medication before boarding. Staying hydrated, avoiding heavy meals, and focusing on the horizon can also help keep nausea at bay.

10. Quarantine and Biosecurity Awareness

Tasmania has strict quarantine laws to protect its unique environment. Make sure you're aware of what items you're allowed to bring into the state. Things like fresh fruit, vegetables, and honey are restricted, so leave these behind or consume them before disembarking. You’ll need to declare certain items upon arrival, such as camping gear, bikes, and fishing equipment, so they can be inspected for soil or plant material.

11. Arrival in Devonport

Once you arrive in Devonport, you'll be well-positioned to start exploring Tasmania’s northern coast. From there, it's a short drive of 15 minutes to Ulverstone, 1.5 hours to Stanley and 3 hours to the beautiful St Helens. Each destination offers unique experiences, from Stanley's charming village and Nut Walk to Ulverstone's family-friendly Fairway Park and the pristine beaches of St Helens.

12. Plan Your Accommodation Ahead

If you're traveling with your caravan or planning to camp, it’s important to book your spot early, especially during peak holiday seasons. Tassie Getaway Parks in Stanley, Ulverstone, and St Helens offer fantastic accommodation options, whether you’re caravanning or looking for a cozy cabin or glamping experience.

13. Enjoy the Journey

The Spirit of Tasmania isn’t just a means to get to Tasmania – it’s part of the adventure. Whether it’s watching the sun rise over the Bass Strait or sharing stories with fellow travelers, make the most of this unique travel experience.
